emily-post-anniversary-gifts-guideEmily Post was the only daughter of architect Bruce Price, well known for the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Château-type stations and hotels. Emily was born in Baltimore, educated at home, and then finished her studies in a School in New York, where her family had moved. She then met a banker named Edwin Main Post at a formal ball and they got married with a very fashionable wedding. In 1905 they divorced, after having two sons, and Emily started writing newspaper articles on architecture and interior design, romantic stories and novels about European and American society which were serialized in several popular magazines.

Why am I telling you about Emily Post? I’ll tell you in a minute! On 1922 she become famous thanks to her book “Etiquette”, and the phrase “according to Emily Post” turned popular meaning the “must” as for social behaviour, her being considered “Mistress of American Manners”.

In the book Etiquette, she also wrote a short anniversary gifts guide for every five years after the first one, up to the 25th, and then, as the last year, the 50th. As already noted in Anniversary Gifts by Year, in 1937 the list was expanded by the American National Retail Jeweler Association, linking the missing years up to the 14th and the still missing multiples of 5. The list was then revisited, updated, to include modern items, and this is how it is today (according to the Chicago Public Library), even if there might be local differences (I added the UK versions, when applicable).

Note: for every year I also added a link to the specific post. When you see numbers as (2), (3) and so on, multiple posts are available
